Weed Management in Sugar Beet Cultivation

Sugar beet is highly sensitive in its early growth stages.

  • Sensitive to drought.
  • Vulnerable to diseases and pests.
  • And most importantly, extremely sensitive to weeds.

Why is weed control crucial?

Uncontrolled weeds in the first 10 days after emergence can reduce yield by up to 20%.

Common Weeds in Sugar Beet Fields

  • Broadleaf weeds: These are widespread and include chard, mallow, montana, and fireweed.
  • Nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus): One of the most aggressive and damaging weeds in sugar beet.
  • Grassy weeds: Such as Bermuda grass and jungle rice.

Effective Weed Control Strategies

There are three key factors for successful weed management:

  1. Choosing the right herbicide.
  2. Applying the correct dosage.
  3. Timing the spray application.

When to start weed control?

  • After sowing, ensure the recommended seed density per acre using monogerm seeds.
  • Once sugar beet emerges, apply herbicide when weeds reach the two-leaf stage (approximately 12-15 days after planting).
  • The best herbicides should contain three active ingredients:
    • Desmedipham
    • Phenmedipham
    • Ethofumesate

Mode of Action

  • Desmedipham & Phenmedipham: Inhibit Hill reaction in photosynthesis, stopping energy production.
  • Ethofumesate: Prevents cell division and wall formation, leading to weed growth suppression.

Expected Results

  • Weeds stop photosynthesizing and growing.
  • Gradual yellowing and wilting occur.
  • Complete weed death within 2-3 weeks post-application.

Recommended Herbicide Dosages

  • 650 ml/acre for Betanal MaxxPro.
  • 1 liter/acre for Python.
  • 800 ml/acre for Tegro.
  • 400 ml/acre for Beta Sana Trio.

Number of Applications

  • One to three applications, depending on weed pressure.

Additional Protection – Metamitron

  • Found in Goltix herbicide.
  • Prevents germination of new weed seeds from the soil.
  • Application:
    • Pre-emergence: 1.5 liters/acre.
    • Post-emergence (combined with other herbicides): 350 ml/acre.

Mechanical Weeding (Hoeing)

  • 25-30 days after planting, mechanical hoeing can be done once or twice.
  • Best performed when sugar beet has 6-8 true leaves.

By following these practices, sugar beet farmers can effectively manage weeds and maximize crop productivity.
