The date palm is one of the most remarkable food-producing trees, representing a valuable national asset for many Arab and Islamic countries. Its significance extends beyond traditional date-producing nations, as several other countries—such as China, Thailand, Peru, Indonesia, and Malaysia—have recently begun investing in date palm cultivation.
Many Arab nations, particularly those in the Gulf region, have led the way in expanding date palm plantations, increasing production, and enhancing quality. Countries like Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the UAE have made significant strides in improving their date industries. Similarly, North African nations, including Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, and Libya, have focused on optimizing date production.
Egypt ranks as the world’s top producer of dates, with an output reaching approximately 1.5 million tons in 2013. This highlights the country’s potential to set global standards for date production and quality.
